QUETTA: The Balochistan government has decided to send Dr Mahnoor Nasir, who was attacked with acid in a Quetta hospital, to the United States for specialized treatment, an official said on Friday.
Shahid Rind, assistant chief minister of Balochistan, said CM Sarfraz Bugti approved Dr Mahnoor’s treatment abroad and the provincial government has initiated the necessary process for the treatment.
According to Rind, the Chief Minister’s Secretariat had formally issued a letter to the relevant authorities in this regard.
He added that the victim would continue receiving treatment at a private hospital in Karachi for another week before arrangements for treatment in the United States are finalized.
Rind said the provincial government was using all available resources to ensure the affected doctor receives the best possible medical facilities and care.
The doctor is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Karachi, where she was shifted earlier this month after being attacked with acid at Quetta Civil Hospital.
Hours after the incident, police said the suspect involved in the acid attack was killed in an encounter.
After his transfer to Karachi hospital, sources said reconstructive surgeons and ophthalmologists had completed the doctor’s assessment.
According to sources, Dr Mahnoor suffered burns on her face, abdomen, legs and right hand.
They said the victim suffered burns on 13% of his body. While his eyes were also affected by the acid, his sight remained intact.
While Dr Mahnoor was receiving treatment for her injuries, Balochistan’s chief minister announced civil compensation for a man who came to her aid after the acid attack.
In a post on X on July 7, the Balochistan chief minister announced the decision while sharing a photograph of hospital staff member Abdul Razzaq Tarakai.
CM Bugti praised Tarakai as a “valuable asset to the society” for quickly coming to the doctor’s aid during the attack, and said that “a civilian award will be given to Abdul Razzaq Tarakai” for displaying extraordinary courage, humanity and dedication to duty.
