Ryanair, the Irish ultra-low-cost airline, has announced plans to increase commissions to its staff members for catching customers with oversized carry-on bags.
The airline, Europe’s largest by passenger numbers, pays a £2.50 bonus to its staff for flagging each customer who breaches baggage rules and offenders are charged €75.
The Dublin-based airline said that thanks to the tireless efforts of its staff, compliance with baggage rules has improved and the number of violators has reduced.
Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary said: “The number of oversized suitcases is falling, I don’t know, from 0.0001 per cent to 0.00001 per cent.”
He added that as the numbers go down, the bonus for airline staff could increase from €2.50 to €3.50 per offender.
He warned customers not to bring oversized bags that do not fit, otherwise “you will be charged.”
O’Leary also called for a ban on alcohol at airports, stating it would help improve passenger behaviour.
Ryanair, known for its hilarious meme- and trolling-based marketing campaign, is an ultra-low-cost airline that offers travel across Europe and some select destinations in North Africa and the Middle East.
Ryanair’s lowest ticket prices typically start from £10 to £15 (or approximately €14.99 for short-haul, one-way European flights).
