Right now, Battlefield 6 It seems like you’re in a bit of a difficult situation. After a record-breaking launch, Steam player numbers have plateaued (according to data from SteamDB) and while the game remains one of the most played on the platform, its population is less than 10% of its high peak.
Developer Battlefield Studios (a combination of Electronic Arts’ Dice, Criterion, Ripple Effect, and Motive teams) suffered layoffs earlier this year, which many speculated was a result of the game failing to retain players according to expectations.
Still, the team is working hard to release regular updates and the latest season, Season 3, releases today. Features a lot of what fans have been asking for: the biggest Battlefield 6 map still, in a new version of the beloved Railway to Golmud of Battlefield 4A variety of new weapons and ranked battle royale gameplay.
Ahead of the season’s launch, executive producer Philippe Ducharme told TechRadar Gaming that the team wanted to strike “the right balance” with the map being added.
“We’ve talked about Season 3 maps. We’ve also hinted at Season 4 maps, which are also very large maps,” he said.
“We’re looking at it as an overall portfolio, making sure we provide maps that fit well with different playstyles and fit well with the season’s themes. We had a need for larger maps, which is something we’re filling now with Golmud and will continue to do so in future seasons.”
Although their prevalence was a common complaint at launch, this doesn’t mean that small maps (often called “meat grinders” by players) are going away.
“Meat grinders are always fun. They are different and can be very frustrating, but they are also fun and attractive maps,” argued Ducharme. “It’s about making sure we’re able to strike the right balance between what we offer our players each season so they’re excited to come back.”
He went on to add that the team is actively “committed to improving the experience” with each new update. “Every season, we deliver extremely engaging new content that’s exciting for players, that’s different,” he continued. “We are also 100% dedicated to ensuring that the overall experience, the foundation we have built, continues to improve.”
We’ll have to wait and see if season 3 is expired again. Battlefield 6 players, or even successfully attracting new ones, but if you’re interested in trying the game, you can buy it on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC now.
