Cunningham recalled his 2024 season with the Phoenix Mercury in his argument that Clark’s star power led to a harder treatment on the competitors court during his rookie season.

“I know that the conversations had Phoenix in their wardrobe, as, ‘we are going to show him what really is the W’,” Cunningham said. “I understand it to some extent. All the rookies who enter the league, that’s how you are going to treat them. But there is more for her. It’s her second year. This is not the first time that Cunningham has reached Clark’s defense. She intervened earlier this season during an altercation on the court between Clark and Sun Jacy Sheldon and Marina Mabrey players.

Clark has generally ruled out ideas that other WNBA players concentrate on it despite the protest of some fans about the perceived lack of calls from referees in favor of fever. Last season, he suggested that he faced an unusual level of physicalness of the opponents.
“I think they are all physical with me. They go out with their own with which other people probably do not come out with their own,” Clark said in 2024, according to Associated Press. “It’s difficult, but that’s just the fact of the matter.
Clark added that the physical style of play is part of the competition.
“This is a very physical game, and you will have pressure. This is professional basketball. It is what is, honestly,” he said.
Earlier this month, Clark’s fellow WNBA players voted for the ninth best league guard. Clark has played in just 13 games this season due to multiple injuries. She is averaging 16.5 points per contest, a few points below her average in 2025.
