- Jamo launches new portable speakers
- Flex and Flow are portable models designed for outdoors
- Reflect is a bedroom speaker and alarm clock.
I feel like it was yesterday for the last time I wrote about Jamo’s new speakers. In fact, it was a week ago when the Scandi Audio brand came back from the dead to reveal seven new speakers, and I guess it’s now back from the dead, with three new portable models.
Jamo has presented the HYG family of portable Bluetooth speakers, made up of three different devices: two outdoor models and one indoor model.
The name comes from hygge, one of the few Swedish words that non-speakers know; is one of those beloved untranslatable phrases that refer to a feeling of comfort and warmth. And the speakers certainly lean into that Scandinavian-chic style.
Before you get too excited about these speakers, keep in mind that you can’t buy them yet. They will go on sale in July.
Here you go (HYG)
The outlier of the new trio is the HYG Reflect, which will cost $149/£129 (around AU$260).
It has been designed as a speaker for your bedside table. It doubles as an alarm clock, wireless charging pad, and, yes, speaker, with dual two-inch drivers and two passive radiators.
Next up, and shown at the top of this article, is HYG Flow. It will retail for $279/£239 (approximately AU$480), a tempting price considering its audio setup is very similar to that of the much more expensive Sonos Move 2.
It features twin one-inch tweeters spaced apart, plus a five-inch woofer; that’s the same layout as the Sonos, although the actual controller will obviously be different. It is compatible with both Bluetooth 6.0 and an auxiliary cable. It can play with other Jamo Auracast speakers, but unlike the Sonos, it doesn’t support Wi-Fi playback, so that’s what you get for paying more for the Sonos.
It’s apparently a portable speaker, weighs 3kg and supports up to 15 hours of playback, but it only has an IPX2 rating; again, that’s weaker than the Sonos.
Finally, there’s the HYG Flow, which is the cheapest member of the group at $129/£109 (around AU$220). It’s long, slim and lightweight, weighing less than a kilogram and comes in six different shades, three of which I’m obsessed with.
It offers two 1.5-inch full-range drivers and two passive radiators, which connect much like the Flow but with a 27-hour battery life. Its IP rating is also IPX7 – fine for splashing around in the pool, but not for use on a sandy beach.
Before the HYG, Jamo had no wireless Bluetooth speakers in its lineup, so it remains to be seen how well it combines its audio prowess with this functional form factor. Julio will say it.
