- Zerowriter Fold is a new word processor with simple functions for writing without distractions
- It has an e-ink screen, similar to Kindles.
- It is currently pledging on Kickstarter, with the first wave scheduled to ship in January 2027.
Have you ever thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if the next Kindle had a built-in keyboard?’ The Zerowriter Fold is a new device with an e-ink display, and it’s the closest thing to it, well, sort of.
While Kindles are perfect for reading, the Zerowriter Fold is a modern typewriter and word processor developed in Canada with a screen similar to that of the best e-readers. However, it is designed specifically for writing text rather than reading books, and the best part is that there are no subscription restrictions. It’s a device, a payment.
At the moment, the Zerowriter Fold is being crowdfunded on Kickstarter and the first wave of orders are scheduled to ship in January 2027, which includes the Zerowriter Fold, a charging cable, a manual, and a key puller for changing the keyboard. It is currently accepting pledges of C$355 (around $256/£192) for the next wave of devices, which will ship in March 2027.
Sure, it’s a long time to wait, but looking at the demand for the first round of pledges (it capped after reaching 500), this is something consumers are really passionate about.
The main goal of the Zerowriter Fold is to eliminate as many distractions as possible, ensuring that 100% of your attention is focused on writing. Unlike desktop word processors, you don’t get advanced features or settings as they can easily host distractions.
Instead, the Zerowriter Fold sticks to the basics: a 6-inch e-ink display and a low-profile mechanical keyboard that’s replaceable, so it’s easy to customize to suit your comfort level. It offers two different writing modes: Drawing Mode for an always-on, distraction-free experience, or Word Processing Mode, which gives you access to more editing tools, such as modifying text types and sizes and bookmarks.
As for its export features, you can save texts to SD cards like you would with a digital camera, scan a QR code to export it to your smartphone, or use a USB-C cable to manage texts directly, but the standout feature is the impressive battery life.
Its built-in battery can run for up to 100 hours with a single use, mainly because the Zerowriter Fold uses a low-power e-ink display. Realistically, no one is going to write for four days straight, so the Zerowriter Fold can last weeks before needing another round of juice.
The company behind the Zerowriter Fold only started its journey in 2024, but it has come a long way since then. Before its latest Kickstarter campaign, the team developed the Zerowriter Ink, which is essentially the Fold but without its laptop-like casing. The company describes its latest word processor as “the first fully realized Zerowriter,” as it states on its website.
