If you want a smart video doorbell but don’t have anywhere to put it, or your landlord’s permission to make permanent changes, then EZVIZ’s new EP4 Peephole looks like a great alternative. It’s a smart video camera that offers all the key features of the best video doorbells, but instead of screwing it to your door, frame or wall, it simply replaces your existing door peephole.
Because it is wireless and requires no additional assembly, if you move to another location in the future, you can simply take it out and replace the original peephole.
Here’s another key benefit: the EP4 supports local storage. If, like me, you’re trying to avoid signing up for another subscription service, that’s a big plus.
EZVIZ EP4 Wireless Peephole Door Viewer: What It Does, How Much It Costs, and Where to Get It
The EZVIZ EP4 comes in two sections: the camera and the display screen. The camera is designed to replace scopes between 14mm and 50mm in diameter, so it should fit most existing scopes, and it has a 7100mAh rechargeable battery, so you won’t need to recharge it every few weeks. The battery in my video doorbell is 5000 mAh and usually lasts me two months on a fairly busy street.
The camera streams 4K video to the handheld viewfinder, which has a 5.5-inch touchscreen. There’s a live view and two-way talk mode, AI-powered facial recognition, human shape detection and infrared detection, and you can customize the detection sensitivity so it doesn’t alert you to irrelevant passersby. Local storage is via microSD card, with support for cards up to 512 GB.
The camera features a wide 155- to 160-degree field of view with automatic distortion correction so your visitors don’t look like they’re auditioning to appear in an emo band’s video. There’s no night vision here, although that shouldn’t be a problem for internal doors to apartment blocks and similar spaces.
EZVIZ is sold through Amazon and EP4 is available now for an RRP of £159.99 on Amazon UK.
In Europe the RRP is €249 but I am already seeing it reduced to €189. Pricing and availability for the US and Australia have yet to be announced.
