United States (US) President Donald Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire against Iran just hours before the 14-day ceasefire extension was set to expire.
Trump took to his own Truth Social platform and announced that although the US military will continue its naval blockade of the Islamic Republic of Iran, he has suspended the attacks.
He said the decision was taken at the request of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
Trump wrote: “Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is severely fractured, as expected, and at the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan, we have been asked to suspend our attack on the country of Iran until such time as its leaders and representatives can present a unified proposal.”
He added that the US military remains ready to respond to any situation. Trump did not specify the timeline by which the ceasefire was extended.
The 47th POTUS said the ceasefire was until such time as the proposal was presented and discussions concluded.
Pakistan has been acting as a mediator between the United States and Iran and has recently stepped up its efforts to achieve peace in the region. Islamabad is preparing to host another round of US-Iran talks scheduled for this week.
