Justice Aurangzeb sworn in as permanent judge of Supreme Court

Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb has taken oath as a permanent judge of the Supreme Court. The oath was administered by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi and the ceremony was held at the Supreme Court.

On December 2, the Judicial Commission proposed that Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, already working as an acting SC judge, be appointed permanent SC judge.

Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Sarfraz Dogar, Justices Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani, Babar Sattar, Tariq Jahangiri, Sardar Ejaz Ishaq and Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz also attended the ceremony.

Also present were Justice KK Agha of the Federal Constitutional Court, Chief Justice Iqbal Hamid-ur-Rahman of the Federal Shariat Court and Advocate Ahsan Bhoon, member of the Judicial Commission.

The event was attended by officials, staff, legal officers and other distinguished guests of the Supreme Court.

Appointment

At the beginning of the meeting, only one PCJ member, Justice Munib Akhtar, voted in favor of Kayani’s elevation to the SC. No other judicial member of the commission, CJP Yahya Afridi, Federal Constitutional Court Chief Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan and Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi supported the proposal.

There is no justification for not elevating Justice Kayani to the high court.

Meanwhile, Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, who is already working as acting SC judge, was proposed to be appointed permanent judge.

Earlier, CJP Afridi was interested in appointing Aurangzeb as IHC chief justice, but most JCP members, especially those belonging to the executive, did not agree with the idea. Instead, they voted in favor of the appointment of Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar as IHC judge.
