American midfielder Johnny Cardoso sprained his right ankle five weeks before the World Cup, his club, Atlético de Madrid, reported Thursday.
Atlético said Cardoso was injured in practice and will undergo rehabilitation. The club did not give a timetable for his return, instead saying in a statement on its social media in English that he “will undergo physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions in the gym, and the progress of his recovery will determine his return to competition.”
La Liga has four games left and Atlético aims to finish in the top four.
The United States opens its World Cup campaign on June 13 against Paraguay in Inglewood, California. They will then also play Australia and Türkiye in Group D.
Cardoso, 24, has 23 appearances for the United States since his debut in 2020.
Atlético were eliminated by Arsenal in the Champions League semi-finals this week.
