A frantic search for two young children ended safely today after an Amber Alert issued overnight was cancelled.
According to statements from the Atlanta Police, the 8 and 9-year-old brothers have been located safe and sound in Louisiana, while their mother, Bernice Keys, 33, is currently in custody.
The alert was issued when it became clear that the woman had taken her two children from their court-appointed guardian at an address in the 400 block of Carey Drive SE in Atlanta.
However, the efforts of several states led to the breakthrough. According to Atlanta police officials, the FBI and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana helped locate Keys and the children.
Both minors were physically unharmed.
A spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department said: “We are relieved to report that the children are safe.”
The defendant is currently in custody in Louisiana, awaiting extradition to Georgia to face charges against him for his role in the reported kidnapping.
This case is still under investigation, but police say there is no threat to the general public.
