Star Wars: Starfighter will be the next Lucasfilm project to take off in that famous galaxy far, far away, and we have a very, very long wait for its arrival.
In fact, since this next Star Wars movie won’t be released until May 28, 2027, you’ll have to wait until the sci-fi adventure starring Ryan Gosling hits a theater near you. Luckily, you can spend the time reading in this guide all the most important information we have so far about one of the most exciting new movies of 2027, including its confirmed cast and possible plot details. As I mentioned before, Star Wars: Starfighter will be released worldwide on May 28, 2027. That official release date was confirmed at Star Wars Celebration 2025.
With principal photography wrapping last December, starfighter is on track to be ready by that date. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are reshot and/or retconned, but I doubt they or the film’s lengthy post-production phase will result in a delay.

No. An exclusive sneak peek was shown to attendees at Star Wars Celebration 2025, but that footage is not yet available online.
Unless a trailer is surprise shown at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 in late July, I wouldn’t be surprised if they make us wait until November or December for a trailer to be publicly revealed. Whenever his first footage officially appears online, I will update this section.

In April 2025, Gosling (Ave Maria Project, Barbie) was the only actor confirmed to appear in a project directed by stranger things, free boyand Deadpool and Wolverine filmmaker Shawn Levy (according to StarWars.com).
However, a separate article published on StarWars.com four months later revealed who will appear alongside Gosling. That includes relative newcomer Flynn Gray (Wednesday), who, judging by the two official behind-the-scenes snapshots released, will co-star alongside starfighterThe main actor.
Despite Gosling, Smith (Dragon House, doctor who) is possibly the next immediately recognizable face among the film’s cast. According to Deadline, Smith will play the villain of Starfighter.
As for the rest of their set, Goth (Pearl, The Odyssey), Peter (Rebel Crest, Lanterns), Adams (Invasion, American Hustle), Ings (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the knights), Bird (The intermediates, Friday night dinner), and Westman (Hedda, The Essex Serpent) are all ready to appear. However, like Gosling, Gray and Smith, their characters’ identities are shrouded in secrecy.

public information about Star Wars: StarfighterThe story is practically non-existent at this point. However, as the previous X/Twitter post confirmed last April, it will be set five years later Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalkerso we know it will take place in a post-First Order galaxy.
Does that mean it will be Star Wars Episode In everything but name? No, director Shawn Levy told Collider, before adding: “It’s a completely new adventure that’s not a sequel or a prequel. Star Wars wasn’t the only star that guided Levy’s vision for starfighterany. In a chat with Vanity Fair, he reveals that outgoing Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy also told him to “make it feel like your movies feel.” So expect it to have the humor, drama, and action of many of his family-oriented works, such as The Adam project for netflix.

As the supposedly leaked story summary in the above X/Twitter post suggests, starfighter We won’t overlook the most important elements of the iconic sci-fi franchise, including the Force.
As expected, lightsabers are also part of this film’s narrative framework, and writer Jonathan Tropper told ScreenRant that the legendary swords used by the Jedi and Sith will have a role to play. Additionally, in a profile piece for The New York Times, Levy also let slip that none other than Tom Cruise had choreographed a lightsaber duel for Star Wars: Starfighter. It’s only fitting, then, that we’ll see some Force wielders in this movie.
Given starfighter takes place after The Rise of SkywalkerCould one of those aforementioned Force users include Daisy Ridley’s Rey? And will Gray’s unnamed character, who teams up with Gosling’s protagonist, also be Force-sensitive? I guess we’ll have to see.
How will Star Wars: Starfighter affect the broader Lucasfilm galaxy?
We don’t know. Right now, Star Wars: Starfighter is advertised as a stand-alone adventure, so it may not even set up one or more of the many new Star Wars movies and TV shows that are in early or active development.
That said, if (and it’s a big if) Ridley’s Rey appears in Gosling’s Star Wars movie, the latter could leave some plot threads loose for the movie starring Rey currently known as New Jedi Order. However, there’s been very little movement on that project since it was first announced, and with Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan recently replacing Kennedy as Lucasfilm’s new co-CEOs, it’s unclear how many of the Star Wars productions in development will actually get made.
