- More clues have emerged about a foldable iPhone
- iOS apps are being updated for larger screen size
- Apple also tells developers to plan for larger screens
Rumors about an ‘iPhone Fold’ have been circulating for years, but it looks like 2026 will be the year Apple finally releases a foldable phone, and many of the most recent hints in this direction come from Apple itself.
As spotted by MacRumors, more native iOS apps are being updated to include a landscape mode option, so they’ll adjust when you turn your iPhone around (and fit nicely on the large screen of a foldable iPhone when it’s open too).
Updated apps include Apple Music, Reminders, Weather, Home, Podcasts, Fitness, Health, Shortcuts, Search, Voice Memos, and Apple Watch app, so this is clearly a concerted and deliberate effort by Apple developers.
These landscape orientation modes aren’t just the standard layout flipped on its side, either. There are left-aligned sidebars in many of the apps to make them easier to navigate when in landscape mode or on a larger screen.
Developer Alert
Apple is flat out telling developers to start designing their iPhone apps for widescreen aspect ratios. This is the biggest indication that the iPhone Ultra Fold will arrive in September. Video source: Apple Platforms State of the Union pic.twitter.com/33Vm1rkC8DJune 10, 2026
Landscape modes aren’t the only hint we’ve had about an upcoming iPhone Fold, either. As Vadim Yuryev discovered, in one of the presentations posted online as part of WWDC 2026, Apple’s Cindy Barrett encouraged developers to code for different screen sizes.
“You’re designing for a dynamic range of sizes and aspect ratios,” Barrett said as he showed off some of the changes Apple has made under the hood with iOS 27, another indication that iPhone apps need to be more flexible now.
So while Apple hasn’t acknowledged that a foldable iPhone is on the way, it seems the rumors are true: the device will launch around September, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro.
And while we refer to it here as the iPhone Fold, those in the know suggest it will be called the iPhone Ultra, a naming scheme Apple has used with its products in the past.
