- Another DC Universe movie starring Batman villains is said to be in the works.
- It could be the next film to arrive after James Gunn’s Superman continuation
- There is confusion among fans about which projects are being prioritized by DC Studios
DC fans have expressed confusion and concern about the broader plan for the DC Universe (DCU) amid reports that another villain-starring Batman movie is being prioritized over one starring The Dark Knight.
With supergirl After enduring a calamitous debut in theaters, grossing a measly $68 million worldwide, all eyes are on DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran to see if they will make any radical changes to their DCU Chapter One lineup.
However, anyone hoping to see or hear that a Batman and/or Wonder Woman movie will be fast-tracked should temper their expectations. This is because, according to The Wrap, the next film that will go into production after The man of tomorrowaka last year’s sequel. Superman The movie will be… one starring Batman’s enemies, Bane and Deathstroke. Yes, really.
The Wrap’s sources aren’t the only ones who have heard that this movie could soon be a reality. In fact, X/Twitter user and trusted industry insider Apocalyptic Horseman has also indicated that a Bane-and-Deathstroke movie is shaping up to be the Warner Bros. subsidiary’s next big-screen project.
This is not the first time rumors about such a film have circulated online. In May, Deadline claimed that the project was not only in the early stages of development, but Greg Mottola (Very badly, Pacifier) had been chosen to direct it.
If Messrs. Gunn and Safran officially greenlight a Bane and Deathstroke movie, it will be the third to feature characters associated with Batman before the Caped Crusader gets a standalone movie.
A project starring Clayface, Batman’s shape-shifting nemesis, which hits theaters in October, is the first of that trio. Meanwhile, an animated puppet film currently titled dynamic duo will feature the DCU versions of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, aka individuals who take on the mantle of Batman’s iconic sidekick, Robin, in DC Comics.
Why Supergirl’s Calamitous Debut Has Put Major Pressure on DC Studios Co-Heads
In the midst of the maelstrom of discourse that has enveloped DC Studios and supergirl Since the latter’s disastrous release, fans have wondered if Gunn and Safran will go back to the drawing board and rework their entire release strategy.
However, they seem to be sticking to their current approach to their nascent film franchise, and that has certainly irked some sectors of the fanbase.
In fact, in numerous threads on r/DCULeaks and r/DC_Cinematic, people have expressed their confusion and frustration that the duo is focusing their efforts on developing projects that won’t star DC Comics’ most famous and popular characters.
Some believe that it is now more important than ever to introduce and establish Batman and Wonder Woman in the DCU, and that if it doesn’t, DC Studios will face an uphill battle to attract newcomers to its fledgling universe. Meanwhile, others say DC Studios should learn from Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) hiatus, which prioritized stories focusing on members of the titular webslinger’s rogues gallery and, although initially doing well, ultimately paid the price amid increasingly negative reviews and declining box office returns.
Then there’s the small matter of Paramount Skydance’s potential purchase of Warner Bros. Pictures. If this goes ahead, some think the DCU could be eliminated before it truly stabilizes, especially if clay face underperforms later this year and Lanternswhich arrives on HBO Max in August, also does not perform as well as expected. Then the pressure would certainly increase The man of tomorrow to save the day and ensure the survival of the DCU, however long that may be.
