Naqvi, Chinese minister promise closer anti-terror cooperation

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and China’s Minister of State for Public Security and head of the Special Services Bureau Ling Zhifeng reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening counterterrorism cooperation and deepening the strategic partnership between the two countries during a meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Naqvi is representing Pakistan at the two-day United Nations Police Chiefs Summit 2026, which will be held at UN Headquarters in New York on July 7-8. The summit has brought together interior ministers, police chiefs and senior UN officials from around the world to discuss how UN police can better respond to changing peace and security challenges, while strengthening international cooperation against transnational crime.

On the sidelines of the summit, Naqvi will also hold a series of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from various countries.

The two ministers agreed to expand cooperation on internal security, emphasizing the need for closer collaboration on border management, illegal immigration and counternarcotics efforts.

Naqvi said there was a need to stop terrorism financing at all levels and called for joint action against countries involved in supporting and financing terrorist groups.

He said Pakistan wanted to further strengthen security cooperation with China and noted that a Special Protection Police Force had been established to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals working in Pakistan.

The Home Minister also underlined the importance of people-to-people contacts in strengthening bilateral ties and said visa facilitation was essential in this regard.

The Chinese minister praised Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism and said the two countries should continue to work together to combat the menace. He also said visa and immigration issues would be reviewed.

Sri Lankan counterpart

Earlier, in a separate meeting, Naqvi met Sri Lankan Home Minister Ananda Wijepala where both sides agreed to strengthen coordination in the fight against narcotics trafficking.

They also decided to improve cooperation on police training and agreed to increase collaboration to curb illegal immigration and the use of counterfeit passports.

The two ministers agreed that the heads of the immigration authorities of both countries would establish immediate contacts to advance cooperation.

They also discussed a memorandum of understanding on combating criminal networks and money laundering and agreed to establish a joint working group between the two interior ministries to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Both sides further agreed to resolve visa-related issues on a priority basis.
