Google Pics, the AI-powered image generation and editing app that the search giant unveiled at Google I/O earlier this year, will launch widely across Google Workspace business and education accounts in August, after just three months of testing as an “experiment” on Gemini Alpha.
Google said the rollout will begin on August 18 for users in organizations with Workspace subscriptions:
- Google Workspace Enterprise Standard
- Google Workspace Business Plus
- Google Workspace Enterprise Standard
- Google Workspace Enterprise Plus
- Expanded access to Google Workspace AI
- Google AI Pro for education
Built on Google’s Nano Banana imaging model, Pics will exist as a standalone web app and integrate directly within Workspace apps like Slides, Docs, and Sheets, and its key features include allowing users to generate images using text messages, manipulate individual elements within images, edit or translate text, swap elements for new ones, and more.
These tools aim to address some of the most common shortcomings of AI-generated images, such as objects not being to scale, text being misspelled (or complete gibberish), and elements that may clash with the background image.
Pics will initially only be available to Google’s business and education customers, and as a product it certainly appears to be targeting a variety of digital image heavyweights like Adobe (particularly its online image editor Adobe Express) and Canva, as well as stock image sites like Shutterstock and iStock.
Photos will compete directly with Canva’s Magic Grab feature (which repositions, resizes and moves objects within images) and Adobe’s built-in background removal tool. By allowing users to edit images directly within their office suite, they won’t need to export resources to external tools.
What changes to expect?
Google said Pics will be enabled by default for all Workspace customers as it rolls out, but there will be an option to disable access if you want.
The company added that generative AI usage limits will be implemented as Pics becomes more available, although users can expect to enjoy higher priority access until February 28, 2027.
Google has not yet given any timeline for when Pics could reach consumer account holders.
