Although Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina closed out the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the tournament’s biggest traffic draw came days before.
Cloudflare has published its own analytics, tracking HTTP traffic, DNS, and security trends across a network spanning more than 330 points of presence in more than 120 countries during June and July 2026.
While the analyzes confirm some widespread assumptions about the World Cup, they also demolish others, as they discovered that it was not the final that moved the Internet the most, but the quarterfinals in which Argentina participated.

According to Cloudflare data, the quarterfinals between Argentina and Switzerland topped all other matches with a deviation factor of about 1.26, while the final ranked eighth.
Unsurprisingly, Argentina, the defending champions, also moved the most traffic during their run, at 1.18 times that of a typical country, followed by France at 1.16 times.
Games played between approximately midnight and 8 a.m. local time produced the largest deviations, in some cases more than doubling normal traffic. The reason is simple: Those are hours when almost no one is online, so fans staying up or getting up early to watch represents a large proportional swing.
Matches that took place between 9am and mid-afternoon were barely recorded, as the people watching them would have been online anyway. The early afternoon games produced a smaller, more visible secondary boost on weekdays, as the games kept people connected during hours when usage would normally decline.
Bosnia and Herzegovina illustrates both ends of this. When the national team played at 2 am local time, the traffic at the points doubled. When they played at night, traffic dropped to around 70% of typical levels as people put down their devices and just watched.
The clearest demonstration came in Brazil’s 2-1 round of 32 victory over Japan on June 29. The same 90 minutes passed during normal waking hours in Brazil and in the dead of night in Tokyo. Japanese traffic developed at approximately double normal levels; Brazilian traffic remained about a quarter below normal. Two almost parallel curves, opposite sides of the baseline, the same coincidence.
Grouping the countries by the shape of their match-day traffic curves produced three groups, and the division reveals something about how people actually watch.
The largest group (44 countries in 101 games) saw traffic increase during halftime and hydration breaks, the familiar pattern of everyone reaching for their phone the moment the game stops. A smaller group of eight countries in 18 matches did exactly the opposite: traffic decreased during those same breaks.
The explanation turned out to be fluent. That second group (Algeria, Tunisia, Jordan, Egypt and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) showed a traffic mix dominated by multimedia and streaming requests, meaning a large portion of viewers were watching the match online rather than on television.
In particular, hydration breaks had little effect in the transmission group, but a clear effect elsewhere. Cloudflare’s reading is that a viewer will not close a stream during a three-minute refresher break, but will do so during a fifteen-minute interval. However, in most countries, even those three minutes were enough to produce a visible hindrance in traffic: Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina showed the effect most strongly.
Requests to gaming industry sites increased overall from the inaugural game onwards. The most interesting change was structural. Before the tournament, betting traffic followed a pronounced weekly rhythm; it then flattened out to a near-constant profile, a consequence, Cloudflare suggests, of the matches unfolding with near-daily regularity for a month.
At the scale at which Cloudflare operates, it is really difficult for a single event to leave a visible mark on aggregated global traffic. The fact that the 2026 World Cup achieved this is the clearest measure of how much the tournament meant to people online.
