Meta abandons major climate commitment after a decade of membership and says it is still committed to renewable energy

  • Meta has financed multiple natural gas power plants in the last 12 months
  • Corporate renewable energy initiative RE100 includes Apple, Google and Microsoft among its 444 members
  • Meta has previously committed to running all of its operations on renewable energy by 2020

Meta has confirmed it will withdraw from the RE100 scheme, following news it has financed several gas-fired power plants over the past year.

As the company leans heavily toward AI and the necessary data centers that come with such a commitment, it has opted to leave the collective of corporations planning the transition to 100% renewable energy, reversing a public commitment made in 2020.
