New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge may not be able to play for his team right now, but that doesn’t mean he’s letting go of the poor performances they’ve had lately.

Judge was direct with his response to the Yankees’ six-game loss heading into the series finale against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday afternoon in the Bronx.

“Well, it’s not great,” he said after his team’s problems. “Just a little lack of focus. We just have to focus. Our ultimate goal is to win a World Series. I think guys have to remember that every day they come here, we’re here to win a World Series.”

Judge didn’t specifically go into what lack of focus is, but went on to say, “I think you guys see it.”

Judge, who has been on the disabled list with a rib injury, believes landing that elusive 28th world championship for the franchise should be motivation enough to right the ship.

“That should motivate you every day you step on that field, no matter what happens, no matter what happens the day before,” he added. “I have a job to do. We have an important sign when you go out on the field. It’s the last sign you see before you go out: it says ‘do your job’. The guys are here to do their job.”

Unfortunately for the Yankees, Judge’s pregame speech did not result in breaking that losing streak on Wednesday. They fell to Detroit 6-2 in 11 innings, where the Tigers scored four runs in the top of the 11th.

The Yankees have lost seven straight and eight of their last 10 games to sit three games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for the American League East lead.

Yes, the Yankees remain in a clear playoff position, topping the American League wild card standings despite the losing streak. But while the American League has been mediocre this season, it’s still a close race as other teams are starting to do well.

New York could certainly use their captain back on the field, but there is no timetable for his return and he had nothing positive to say about his rehabilitation in terms of donning the pinstripes again anytime soon.

“You know how it is here: Guys can feel good or bad, but you have to wait until you see the pictures,” Judge said of his rib. The Yankees said when the injury was diagnosed that they would perform additional imaging approximately four to six weeks later.

“There’s no need to talk about this now,” Judge said. “I know it’s an important topic and a big problem, but I want to tell you the full story.”

The Yankees’ story right now is bleak, but there’s still plenty of season left to play. Perhaps the All-Star break, which begins July 13, could be a good reset as they look to get back to winning ways.
