- Anthropic cancels access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5
- The move comes after a directive from the US government.
- A possible jailbreak is likely the reason for the access change.
Under orders from the US government, Anthropic is removing access to its latest AI models Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Access to other models is not affected and the company is working to “restore access as soon as possible.”
The White House directive, issued at 5:21 p.m. ET, was to block access to next-generation AI models to “any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including Anthropic’s foreign employees,” according to Anthropic’s blog post.
However, with no way to enforce that rule at this time, access has been universally removed. While we don’t have many details, Anthropic says it understands the US government is concerned about a “possible leak,” but it appears to be “narrow,” “not universal,” and not sufficient reason to remove access to the model, in Anthropic’s words.
“If this standard were applied industry-wide, we believe it would essentially stop all new model implementations for all frontier model vendors,” Anthropic explains. “We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible.”
“This has to be a joke”
Fable 5 suspended indefinitely due to national security concerns from r/ClaudeAI
Fable 5, the most restricted public version of the Mythos 5 AI model from Anthropic’s trusted partners, has only been available for a few days and users have been busy putting it through its paces. It promises a significant advance in coding, reasoning, and agency actions, and was subjected to an exhaustive research process before its release.
Anthropic notes that it worked closely with US and UK authorities, and multiple external agencies and internal teams, to make Mythos 5 and Fable 5 safe to use. Fable’s safeguards are “substantially more effective than any previously implemented model,” according to Anthropic.
Those safeguards appear not to be enough for now. This story will clearly go on and on as we discover more details about exactly what kind of jailbreak has been found, but it’s clear that Anthropic doesn’t believe it’s as dangerous as the White House.
Users are understandably unimpressed: one poster says it’s an “absolute nightmare scenario,” while another says “this has to be a joke,” and there’s a lot of speculation about what this means for other AI models (including those in China).
