Bushra Bibi taken to hospital, says PTI president Barrister Gohar

Gohar says he was informed by message, is waiting for information about treatment and will request to be allowed to reunite with his family.

Bushara Bibi, wife of jailed former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, was taken to hospital last night, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan posted on X on Friday.

“Pending that, I would ask for a meeting of the family members with her. And also a meeting of Khan Sab’s family with him and for Khan Sab to be taken to the hospital for treatment,” he said in a post.

He also wrote that “the sooner the better. It is his basic right under the law. His health is too serious and all Pakistanis are deeply worried.”

Imran and Bushra Bibi remain imprisoned in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. They were sentenced on December 20, 2025 to 17 years in prison in the Toshakhana-II case, which concerns allegations that the couple illegally withheld a set of Bulgari jewelry gifted by the Saudi crown prince during an official visit to Saudi Arabia.

In March, Bushra Bibi underwent a medical examination at Adiala prison after complaining of pain in her right eye. She was reportedly examined by Dr Muhammad Arif Khan, head of the ophthalmology department at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). The medical report indicated that he had been experiencing blurred vision and black spots in his right eye; He also reported seeing flashes in the dark and said he suffered from headaches.

The examination diagnosed Bushra Bibi with posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) in her right eye. The report also identified myopia and astigmatism. After the diagnosis, Bushra Bibi was prescribed eye drops and medication, in addition to wearing glasses. They reportedly recommended a follow-up medical checkup after four weeks.

Imran had also undergone a minor eye procedure in late January. Five days after the procedure, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said PIMS doctors conducted another examination of Imran’s eyes and, after obtaining his written consent, carried out a minor medical procedure that lasted about 20 minutes.

Amid growing concern over Imran’s deteriorating eyesight in custody in Adiala, the Supreme Court took up the matter following a report filed by his lawyer Salman Safdar. The lawyer, acting as amicus curiae, reported that the former prime minister had lost 85% of the vision in his right eye. The report submitted by Safdar also noted that Imran had sought urgent access to specialist doctors regarding his eye.

Then in March, Imran underwent another medical check-up in Adiala, following which PIMS claimed that the former prime minister had shown significant improvement in his vision. This followed a second dose of an anti-VEGF intravitreal injection. The former prime minister received a third dose of the jab at the end of March.
