talking to rolling stone Before the release, Charli described her instinct to distance herself from what made her Golf club such a phenomenon instead of trying to replicate it.
“All my albums work in opposites,” he said.
“They repel each other, and that’s the connective tissue. When I was doing it I knew I would never make that record again. It’s not creatively rewarding for me to do the same thing twice.”
The album comes after a signature 18 months for the singer, who has released a soundtrack album for Wuthering Heightsstarred in the mockumentary The momentand continued to release new content and skins at a steady pace.
In one of the film’s most memorable moments referenced by critics, Kylie Jenner’s fictional cameo in The moment tells Charli’s character, “The moment people get tired of you, that’s when you have to try even harder,” a line that Charli’s recent string of posts seem to follow, whether read as sincere or tongue-in-cheek.
The album cover features three figures chosen to represent its title, each drawn from a different creative field: musician John Cale, fashion designer Marc Jacobs and director Martin Scorsese, photographed together in a kitchen.
Speaking about how he was approached for the shoot, Cale described the invitation as characteristically spontaneous: “He said he had an idea to introduce myself. There was talk of a video, an ode to a imprint of time and place. The next thing I did was be on a flight.”
Music, Fashion, Cinema is Charli’s fourth full-length release in just over two years.
