Court grants bail to SSP’s son arrested in DHA instant verification incident

The court grants bail to the accused while investigation is launched against SI Shehzan for the video of the altercation; report requested in 3 days

The case of an altercation between a police sub-inspector (SI) and a youth during a quick check in the posh Defense area of the metropolis has taken a new turn: the accused has been released on bail while a departmental inquiry is launched against police officer Shehzan Shakeel.

The youth, seen arguing with police officers in a viral video, has been released after the Southern District Judicial Magistrate granted him bail on sureties of Rs 50,000.

The accused, identified as Khubaib, son of a police officer, was earlier arrested on charges including interference with official duties and alleged misconduct with a uniformed police officer, SI Shehzan Shakeel. He appeared in court along with his legal team comprising Osama Ali Gujjar, Faisal Sheikh and Waheed Sheikh Advocates.

During the hearing, defense attorney Gujar argued that the case was based on a false and fabricated story. He maintained that the incident was a result of a misunderstanding and that the accused did not resist the police or misbehave.

He further said that after the incident, the accused accompanied his parents to the police station, where a police officer reportedly admitted a mistake, following which the matter was resolved through mutual understanding.

He also questioned the timing of the FIR, stating that it was lodged nine hours after the incident, raising concerns over its authenticity. He added that all charges in the case are bailable and that the defendant is willing to cooperate fully with the investigation.

However, according to the police, the accused had an altercation with the police personnel during speed check and allegedly misbehaved with the officials while interfering with their official duties. A case was registered against him at the Defense police station.

Meanwhile, senior authorities have launched a departmental probe into the conduct of SI Shehzan Shakeel, and SP Clifton Khalid Javed has been appointed as the investigation officer. He has been tasked with examining the viral video of the altercation, reviewing all available records, determining responsibility and submitting a report within three days.

Initial reports suggest that SI Shehzan Shakeel’s suspension orders were issued earlier but were later withdrawn, indicating internal pressure and different positions within the police hierarchy.

Officials said both sides have issued video statements blaming each other for the incident. While attempts are reportedly being made to resolve the matter, viral images circulating on social media and national media have put the case under intense public scrutiny.

The authorities have ordered that the investigation be carried out in a transparent and impartial manner to establish facts and determine responsibilities.

The incident occurred during a quick check in Phase VII between Thursday and Friday night, when police stopped a dual-cab vehicle equipped with police-style lights and an allegedly fake license plate. What followed was a heated exchange between the driver, later identified as Khubaib, son of senior superintendent of police Naseem Ara Panhwar, and sub-inspector Shahzaib Shakeel, in-charge of the Qayyumabad police outpost.

In videos recorded from both sides, the situation quickly escalated. Police footage showed the officer accusing the young man of insulting him and grabbing him by the neck, while repeatedly warning him to be respectful.

A separate clip, filmed by the driver, captured the officer responding: “What was so special about being the son of the SSP? I’m one too,” as tensions rose.

Police later registered a case and arrested Khubaib on charges of obstruction of duty, impersonation and use of false number plate, besides allegations of misconduct and physical confrontation. Authorities said the vehicle was carrying unauthorized police accessories, including tinted windows and officer-style lights.

According to the first information, the suspect refused to identify himself, stated that his mother was a senior officer and ordered the armed guards accompanying him to push the officer. The complainant further alleged that during an attempt to arrest him, the suspect grabbed him by the neck, used abusive language and fled the scene with his guards.

However, the suspect’s father, Ali Anwar, presented a very different account. Speaking to reporters, he stated that after the incident, both he and his wife had gone to the police station, where the officer in question had apologized. He said the family fully cooperated and handed over the vehicle, but alleged that the situation had changed dramatically after the video went viral.
