Court grants bail to SSP’s son arrested in DHA instant verification incident

A judicial magistrate on Saturday granted bail to Khubaib, son of a senior police officer, who was arrested from Karachi’s Defense Housing Authority (DHA) following a heated argument with police officers over an allegedly fake number plate on a luxury vehicle.

The hearing was held before the Judicial Magistrate Court (South) where the suspect appeared along with his lawyers including Usama Ali Gujar, Faisal Sheikh and Waheed Sheikh.

During the trial, the defense attorney argued that the case against the suspect was based on a false and fabricated story, and maintained that the incident was due to a misunderstanding. The lawyer stated that the suspect did not resist the police officers and had voluntarily gone to the police station with his parents after the incident.

The defense further argued that a police officer had acknowledged a mistake at the police station and that the matter had been resolved through dialogue. He also challenged the registration of the case nine hours after the alleged incident, arguing that all charges included in the case were bailable and that the accused was willing to fully cooperate with the investigation.

After hearing the arguments, the court accepted the bail application and directed the suspect to furnish sureties worth Rs 50,000.

According to police, the suspect had gotten into fights with officers, used abusive language and interfered with their official duties. A case was registered against him at the Defense Police Station.

Speaking to the media inside the court premises after getting bail, Khubaib claimed that there was no formal check post at the place where he was detained.

“There was no proper checkpoint where they stopped me. The police had another intention and wanted to defame me,” he said.

He said they did not demand money from him and added that he had introduced his mother to the officers when they detained him.

Khubaib further said that one of the officials claimed to be a police station officer, while he himself was a law student awaiting his leave. He said he then went to the police station with his parents to resolve the matter.

The incident occurred during a quick check in Phase VII between Thursday and Friday night, when police stopped a dual-cab vehicle equipped with police-style lights and an allegedly fake license plate. What followed was a heated exchange between the driver, later identified as Khubaib, son of senior superintendent of police Naseem Ara Panhwar, and sub-inspector Shahzaib Shakeel, in-charge of the Qayyumabad police outpost.

In videos recorded from both sides, the situation quickly escalated. Police footage showed the officer accusing the young man of insulting him and grabbing him by the neck, while repeatedly warning him to be respectful.

A separate clip, filmed by the driver, captured the officer responding: “What was so special about being the son of the SSP? I’m one too,” as tensions rose.

Police later registered a case and arrested Khubaib on charges of obstruction of duty, impersonation and use of false number plate, besides allegations of misconduct and physical confrontation. Authorities said the vehicle was carrying unauthorized police accessories, including tinted windows and officer-style lights.

According to the first information, the suspect refused to identify himself, stated that his mother was a senior officer and ordered the armed guards accompanying him to push the officer. The complainant further alleged that during an attempt to arrest him, the suspect grabbed him by the neck, used abusive language and fled the scene with his guards.

However, the suspect’s father, Ali Anwar, presented a very different account. Speaking to reporters, he stated that after the incident, both he and his wife had gone to the police station, where the officer in question had apologized. He said the family fully cooperated and handed over the vehicle, but alleged that the situation had changed dramatically after the video went viral.
