- DC Studios will not alter its long-term vision for its cinematic universe
- That’s what co-CEO Peter Safran told a reporter afterward supergirlThe disastrous launch
- The film starring Milly Alcock grossed only $68 million during its opening weekend.
It seems like it’s time to limit the damage for DC Studios.
After supergirl Released (and subsequently bombed) at the global box office, the comic book giant’s film and television division seemingly refuses to alter its broader plan for its nascent cinematic universe.
In fact, speaking with The New York Times (NYT) in the wake of supergirlAfter a disastrous opening weekend performance, DC Studios co-head Peter Safran insisted that he, fellow studio head James Gunn, and parent company Warner Bros. “remain confident in” the long-term vision of the DC Universe (DCU). That’s despite Safran admitting that the Milly Alcock-starring film “didn’t meet our box office expectations.”
Such a statement is, well, an understatement. Upon its release on June 26, the film formerly known as Supergirl: the woman of tomorrow suffered a somewhat catastrophic debut. As the NYT report noted, DCU Chapter One earned a measly $68 million worldwide ($38 million in North America and $30 million internationally) during its first four days in theaters.
To put the first of those figures into a terribly bleak context, the much-maligned Spider-Man spin-off film morbiumalso known as the vampire anti-hero movie starring Jared Leto, earned just $39 million in North America during its miserable opening weekend in late 2022.
What are you doing? supergirl‘s’ performance is even worse because, at the time of publication, it has a mediocre critical score of 56% on the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, morbium has been stuck at a grueling 15% for almost four years. The fact that the second DCU Chapter One movie earned $1 million less in North America than Morbius, then, should really set alarm bells ringing at DC Studios headquarters.
Why didn’t Supergirl manage to fly higher at the global box office?
There are numerous reasons that can be pointed out, including the current debate over superhero fatigue, the prioritization of a new supergirl movie about, say, a movie starring another of DC Comics’ so-called Holy Trinity in Batman and Wonder Woman and, perhaps most crucial of all, word of mouth. After all, when it comes to the last of those reasons, movies can live or die by what critics and/or the general public not only think of them, but say about them. You can see what I thought of the Alcock-directed adventure through my account. supergirl review.
But I digress. In my opinion, there is another major cause for Supergirl’s incredibly poor performance worldwide, and it has to do with two powerful animated film franchises: toy story and Minions.
Regarding the first, the critical reception of its fifth installment was as varied as supergirlthe one of was. Hell, in me toy story 5 review, I gave it three out of five stars, which is the same score supergirl cattle.
However, toy storyHis immense popularity means that he can, at least for now, withstand any negativity that comes his way. This is clear based on their own worldwide ticket sales, which they have seen toy story 5 It racked up an incredible $585 million (according to Variety) in its first 12 days in theaters.
Then we come to the other series of billion-dollar movies mentioned above in Minions. With your next story – Minions and monsters – which will not only arrive on July 3, but is also expected to generate an equally huge sum of cash, the time of supergirlThe release couldn’t have been worse. Perhaps if its release had been delayed until August, when its biggest competitor would have possibly been next. Insidious movie, could have been shot higher.
