GB raises govt’s priority as steps underway to improve infrastructure, create jobs: PM Shehbaz


It says elected representatives reflect the public’s expectations, issues and priorities.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday termed the development of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) as a priority of the federal government and said special attention was being paid to improving infrastructure, communications, energy, education, health and tourism as well as increasing employment opportunities in the region.

During a meeting with the newly elected members of the GB Assembly belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), who visited him in Islamabad, the prime minister said that the local economy would be further strengthened by utilizing the natural resources, tourist destinations and mineral reserves of the region.

He said providing quality education, modern technical training and decent employment to young people was a key priority of the government, enabling them to play a role in national development.

The Prime Minister said elected representatives served as a direct source of awareness on public expectations, issues and priorities, adding that regardless of political affiliation, the sole purpose of leadership should be public service and making people’s lives easier.

Thanking the people of Britain for demonstrating their love, loyalty and national unity with Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz said that the construction of four Danish schools in the region was in its final stage and classes would begin next year.

He also said work on a 100-megawatt solar power project was progressing rapidly and assured the delegation that the federal government was using all available resources to ensure the timely completion of ongoing development projects in Britain.

The Prime Minister said an early warning system for climate change and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) had been installed in Britain to provide timely information to residents and help them cope with adverse weather conditions.

He said effective communication between the federal government and local leadership was essential to solve public problems, ensure better governance and promote transparency.

Assuring the delegation that their suggestions would be considered, the Prime Minister said the government would work in coordination with them for the welfare of the people of GB. He also urged parliamentarians to play a constructive role and expressed hope that GB will achieve greater development and prosperity through collective efforts.

Prime Minister Shehbaz ordered the formation of a committee, to be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister Ishaq Dar, to review the viable proposals put forward by the legislators and submit a report. The committee will also include Kashmir and GB Affairs Minister Amir Muqam and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Minister for Kashmir and GB Affairs Amir Muqam and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah.
