US Men’s National Team Seeks World Cup Glory, Prepares for Game Against Paraguay

One of the stars of Ghana’s World Cup team will be absent from its first match of the tournament in Canada after being denied entry into the country.
Thomas Partey, a former Arsenal player who now plays for La Liga club Villarreal, is currently facing seven charges of rape, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
“FIFA can confirm that player Thomas Partey will not be able to travel from the Ghana team’s base camp in Boston, USA, to Canada for their first match against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, as his visa application has been rejected by the Canadian government,” FIFA said in a statement, via The Athletic.

“FIFA is not involved in host countries’ immigration processes, including the adjudication of visas. As in previous FIFA events, the host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted to the country.”
Five of the charges were laid last July by London’s Metropolitan Police and two more were laid earlier this year.
Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has explained why he chose Partey for his World Cup squad as he awaits trial.
Queiroz cited a presumption of innocence for Partey, criticized the snap judgments of modern social media and spoke philosophically in comments Monday night before a warm-up match in Wales.

“Let events take their normal course, let the river flow and one day, when the river meets the ocean, we will find the truth,” said Queiroz, a veteran coach who will go to his fifth consecutive World Cup after coaching his native Portugal and Iran in previous editions.
Ghana will open their tournament on Wednesday against Panama in Toronto. Ghana will then play England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium and then on June 27 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
