Prince William has delivered one of his strongest messages in the fight against homelessness as his Homewards initiative celebrated its third anniversary.
Speaking at a special event in central London on Tuesday, the Prince of Wales stated that homelessness should no longer be seen as a problem that society simply manages, but as a problem that can be stopped before it starts.
Reflecting on the project’s progress since its launch in 2023, William said the program is already showing encouraging results in its six pilot locations, where communities are working together to prevent people from losing their homes.
The royal’s commitment to the cause dates back more than three decades and was sparked by his late mother, Princess Diana, who first took him to visit a homeless shelter when he was just 11 years old.
That experience left a lasting impression and has shaped what he describes as one of the most important missions of his life.
Addressing his supporters, William argued that the lack of protection is the result of broken systems rather than personal failure, and called for earlier intervention and better support to prevent vulnerable people from reaching crisis point.
He said the success seen so far demonstrates that coordinated action between charities, businesses and local communities can deliver lasting change.
William also reflected on the many people he has met over the years visiting shelters and charities, and said each story has reinforced the importance of timely support.
The future king stressed that many lives could have taken a different path if help had arrived sooner, adding that no child should ever face the fear of being homeless.
Closing his speech, he urged his partners and supporters to build on the momentum already created, encouraging them to challenge old ways of thinking to avoid this cycle.
