The 2026 Tour de France continues today with stage 19, the first of two successive summit finishes on the iconic Alpe d’Huez. The name alone conjures up images of legendary Tour moments from years past, from Fausto Coppi’s incredible rise to victory in 1952, to Tom Pidcock’s descent 70 years later. Today’s stage is a 127.9km route from Gap that includes 3,500m of elevation gain, starting with the category two Col Bayard, a 4.8km long climb with an average gradient of 7.2%. Runners will have a break with a short descent and a short flat section, before tackling the category 1 Col du Noyer (7.2 km at 8.5%) that will take them to the top. They will be far from finished, however, as there are still 100km to go, including the category three Col d’Ornon (5.4km at 6.4%) before tackling Alpe d’Huez with its familiar 21 hairpin bends.
Olympic road and time trial champion Remco Evenepoel has closed the gap on four-time TdF winner Tadej Pogacar to four minutes and 32 seconds, but with just three stages remaining it will take a huge effort to prevent the Slovenian from adding a fifth yellow jersey to his haul. That would put him on par with the legendary quartet Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain, and I wouldn’t bet against him surpassing them in the years to come.
