Italian skier Matteo Franzoso He died only a few days before his 26th birthday after a serious head injury in an accident during training in Chile during the weekend, authorities confirmed this week.
He Italian Winter Sports Federation (Fisi) He issued a statement confirming the death of Franzoso, 25, who was injured as a mortal on Saturday when he crashed during a training session in La Parva, approximately 30 miles from Santiago, Chile.

According to the officials, Franzoso crashed into a fence while trying a small jump. It was “immediately” achieved by an air ambulance and taken to an intensive care unit, where it was placed in a medically induced coma.

Physi said Monday that he died as a result of the head injury and a resulting brain edema. His 26th birthday was Tuesday.
“This is a tragedy for the family and for our sport,” said the president of Fisi, Flavio Roda, in a statement. “It is a tragedy that takes us back to the mood that we had recently less than a year ago, when Matilde Lorenzi died.”

Italian skier Matilde Lorenzi died less than a year ago in October 2024 after a Fall during a training session. She was 19 years old.
“It is absolutely essential to do everything possible to ensure that such incidents will never happen again,” Roda’s statement continued. “At this sad and painful moment, I want to tell all the athletes and coaches, in each sport, that the Federation is by their side and that they will find all the support they need. I ask for the greatest respect for Matteo’s family, whom we will continue close to all the necessary senses.”

Franzoso won a Super G race in the second level European Cup circuit in 2021, after having finished fourth in the descent in the Junior World Championship in 2020. It competed in 17 World Cup races: 11 super-GS and six casualties. His best result of the World Cup was 28 in a super-g in Cortina D’Ampezzo in January 2023.
Franzoso was training with the prominent of the Italian team Dominik Paris, Christof Innerhofer, Mattia Casse and others ahead of the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games in February.
