Katie Boulter falls in first round at Wimbledon as British struggles continue

Katie Boulter was eliminated from Wimbledon after a first round defeat and British hopes suffered another blow on Tuesday 30 June 2026.

The British number 2 was surpassed throughout the match by Tyra, who was making her debut in a Grand Slam.

The match barely lasted more than an hour and six minutes before Grant handed Boulter a crushing defeat.

The 18-year-old Italian phenom defeated Boulter in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

Boulter had a poor start to the day, as he failed to claim a single break point and committed 21 unforced errors; conversely, Grant did not face a single break point.

Boulter, with this defeat, became the eleventh British player to admit defeat in this year’s Championship.

While on the opening day, all ten Britons in action at Wimbledon lost their matches.

It is the first time in nine years that British number two Boulter has faced a first-round defeat at Wimbledon.

Boulter, 29, was Britain’s main hope for victory this fortnight after Monday’s 10-man elimination of Raducanu and Draper.

Grant, 18, trained with Jannik Sinner as a child and with this victory she has shown the tennis world that a star has arrived.
