Lizzo has responded to claims that she has been speaking disparagingly about Taylor Swift, calling the accusation flatly false and telling her critics to “grow up.”
The dispute began on May 22 when an X user posted a comparison of streaming numbers for Taylor Swift’s latest album. The life of a showgirl along with Drake’s recent triple release, compared to Lizzo’s 2025 mixtape MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILE.
The post included a clip of Lizzo. STFU music video. Lizzo shared it and asked her followers what it was supposed to mean.
When one user responded by claiming that the numbers showed that “all that s**t you talked about Tay finally caught up with you,” Lizzo disagreed.
“Are you OK?” she responded.
“First of all, I’ve never talked shit about Taylor Swift; plus, while we’re on the subject, I’ve never talked shit about any artist. Just because I mention an artist by name doesn’t mean I’m talking shit; please grow up.”
The irony is that the evidence points firmly in the other direction when it comes to Lizzo’s feelings toward Swift.
Just a few days before the exchange, in the May 15 episode of Verified GeniusLizzo was promoting her new single BITCH and in the process made a direct and affectionate comparison to Taylor.
The song features Meredith Brooks’ 1997 hit of the same name, and Lizzo wanted to make sure the original artist received her flowers, a decision she very deliberately framed as channeling Swift’s approach to ownership and credit.
“Do you know what ‘Taylor’s Version’ is like?” he said. “It’s like, ‘B*tch (Lizzo version).'”
The admiration goes back even further.
In a 2022 appearance in The breakfast clubLizzo jokingly called herself “Black Taylor Swift,” noting their shared habit of harnessing personal relationships and heartbreak as creative fuel.
“I’m Black Taylor Swift,” she said. “I really am, I am insignificant.”
He went on to describe how he approaches writing about his exes in a way that feels recognizably Swiftian, highlighting the experience without completely burning the person’s reputation.
None of that suggests a woman with a special interest. And now she has said it herself, in very clear terms.
