- modern warfare 4 emerges as one of the most well-founded Obligations experiences in years
- Features realistic character designs and playable ‘Mil-Sim’ operators.
- The game’s lead designer says, “There’s a lot of depth in the raw stuff.”
One of the first things I noticed when entering multiplayer. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 it’s its grittier tone and overall art direction. It’s night and day compared to the more bombastic and stylized direction of Black ops 7populated by playable characters that look much more like modern soldiers.
A handful of beloved ‘Mil-Sim’ (short for military simulation) operators from the past modern warfare The games are also back, giving more realism-focused players the ability to enter as anonymous soldiers from the likes of the SAS or Korean Army rather than the roster of differently named heroes.
“We want those characters to feel set in our world and to match the tone and feel of our world,” multiplayer creative director Joe Cecot explains as we chat in one of the many meeting rooms at developer Infinity Ward’s Los Angeles office.
Even central characters like Ghost have completely new designs that embody a somewhat more realistic aesthetic.
“Joel Emsley, our studio’s art director, is the person behind Price and Ghost and all these different iconic characters,” he continues.
“In each game he raises his level and thinks ‘how can I improve?’ We have those ‘Mil-Sim’ type of characters, and then we have Ghost, who is like both ‘Mil-Sim’, but now he has the new mask that he has adapted from pieces of things he found. “He’s a badass character that fits into our world but feels completely new.”
“I feel like there’s a lot of depth to the raw stuff and we want to keep exploring it,” adds lead game designer Jackie Reynolds, possibly hinting at the studio’s approach to any post-release aspects.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be launched on October 23, 2026. It will be the first modern Obligations game to skip previous generations of consoles, releasing exclusively on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
