NDMA warns after opening of Tarbela spillways

ISLAMABAD:

The NDMA on Friday warned of an expected increase in water flow in the Indus River after the Tarbela Dam spillways were opened.

According to the NDMA, the release of water from spillways is expected to significantly increase river flows in downstream areas along the Indus. The authority urged the population to avoid recreational and tourist activities along the river, warning that strong currents could pose serious risks.

He also advised people to stay away from waterways and river channels during periods of high flow.

The NDMA said higher water flows are expected particularly in low-lying areas along the Indus River, especially in Layyah, Bhakkar and Mianwali districts.

He attributed the increase in river discharge to rapid melting of glaciers caused by rising temperatures, along with rainfall in upper catchments.

The authority said it is continuously monitoring the evolving situation, conducting advanced risk assessments and ensuring timely dissemination of necessary information to relevant departments and the public to minimize potential dangers.
