- NordVPN just announced a huge improvement in its network capacity
- Its global aggregate capacity has exceeded 100 Tbps.
- This should mean more stable performance even during peak hours.
NordVPN just crossed a major milestone: its global aggregate network capacity now exceeds 100 terabits per second (Tbps).
The idea behind the update is simple: prevent one of the most annoying VPN problems before it starts. NordVPN says the network is designed with enough extra capacity to keep connections stable even during peaks in demand.
In our testing, we already consider NordVPN to be at the top of our list of the best VPNs. The new update should provide peace of mind to users who tend to connect to the VPN during peak hours. That’s how it works.

Prevent slowdowns before they occur
NordVPN says its network now exceeds 100 Tbps in aggregate capacity, spread across 211 locations in over 135 countries. This gives you more room to handle demand before users feel the strain.
The ultimate goal is for users to never feel like the network is busy at that moment. Using a virtual server network (VPN) is sometimes associated with buffering, slow loading times, or disconnections, but adding more network capacity should prevent this. Bottlenecks may still occur, but they will often be caused by your local connection and not the VPN itself.
The new update has to do with free space. You won’t get higher speeds on a single connection unless your connection is already hampered by VPN network congestion. However, NordVPN already offers solid speeds, with a record speed of 1249 Mbps in our extensive tests.
Why is it important
This is important because VPN slowdowns don’t happen out of nowhere. In fact, as NordVPN says, slowdowns are often due to insufficient capacity. That’s why the latest update is a means to avoid this, adding extra space on top of the already existing free space.
NordVPN reveals that its servers are running at about a third of their capacity by design, so it looks like potential slowdowns will be in the rearview mirror with this new update.
Marijus Briedis, CTO at NordVPN, said: “Great infrastructure is one that you never notice. In practice, 100 Tbps means more space to absorb increases in demand, resulting in fewer bottlenecks when everyone connects at the same time, and faster, more reliable connections that users can actually feel.”
You don’t need to do anything to activate the new update, although it doesn’t hurt to make sure your NordVPN app is running the latest version.
NordVPN believes that server quality is more important than quantity, and this update should go a long way to improving the former. That said, the VPN provider still has a strong network and recently expanded with the addition of 211 new server locations around the world.
