NYPD Revokes Ban on Viewing Parties Outside MSG for Knicks NBA Finals Game 1

New York Knicks fans are about to party like it’s 1999.

For the first time in 27 years, the Knicks are in the NBA Finals, but for a brief time, the New York Police Department banned viewing parties outside Madison Square Garden because the Knicks faithful became too rowdy.

Well, for the Knicks’ biggest game this millennium, the NYPD changed course.

The Knicks will host a viewing party at Plaza 33 outside the stadium for Game 1 on Wednesday night after Madison Square Garden requested permits.

The San Antonio Spurs will host the first two games before MSG hosts Game 3 on Monday. Game 1 will also be streamed live inside the arena, tickets will be $10 and proceeds will go to the Garden of Dreams Foundation.

Six arrests were made outside MSG during Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Knicks took a 2-0 series lead just days after completing a 22-point fourth-quarter comeback, which really started the rampage.

Even though there was no viewing party for the Knicks’ decisive game last week, fans still took to the streets to celebrate.

Videos emerged from Manhattan intersections, packed bars outside Madison Square Garden, and thunderous chants of “WE WANT WEMBY” outside MSG.

Fans carried brooms through the streets of Manhattan in anticipation of a Cavaliers sweep, rode traffic lights as NYPD officers ordered them down, and unleashed the kind of basketball pandemonium that New York has waited decades to experience again.

Even Radio City Music Hall erupted with Knick chants as the city collectively lost its mind Monday night.

The Knicks are underdogs against the Spurs, who defeated the reigning NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 on the road on Saturday.
