OpenAI on Thursday unveiled ChatGPT Work, an agent for its popular chatbot designed to execute tasks across different apps and files, marking the startup’s latest push toward workplace automation.

ChatGPT Work, powered by OpenAI’s advanced GPT-5.6 AI model, can collect context from applications, files and workflows to create finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports and websites, the company said.

The launch reflects increasingly intense competition to build and sell artificial intelligence tools for professional use, as technology companies seek to capitalize on growing demand for autonomous agents that can complete complex tasks with minimal human involvement.

Prior to this release, OpenAI’s agent offerings included Operator and Deep Research, which were later consolidated into ChatGPT Agent for individual users, as well as Workspace Agents for enterprise workflow automation.

ChatGPT Work comes months after OpenAI rival Anthropic ramped up its business push with Claude Cowork, an agent capable of autonomously planning and executing multi-step tasks.

Earlier this year, Anthropic launched plugins for its agent Claude Cowork to automate legal, sales, marketing, and data analysis tasks. The move triggered a sharp sell-off in U.S. and European software and professional services stocks on fears of widespread AI-driven disruption in the data analytics industry.

Shortly after Anthropic, OpenAI sponsor Microsoft MSFT.O also introduced Copilot Cowork to develop its agent AI offering.

OpenAI, which is preparing for an initial public offering, also announced a new ChatGPT desktop app and a hosted websites feature to allow users to create and share websites directly through ChatGPT Work.

ChatGPT Work will launch Thursday on web and mobile, starting with Pro, Enterprise and Edu users, and expanding to Plus and Business users in the coming days.
