The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has decided to introduce an electric trolley service at major airports to facilitate the movement of passengers between key areas within the terminal premises.
According to PAA, the service will be launched at Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Multan airports in the first phase.
A tender has already been launched for the acquisition of the electric car service, he indicated.
The facility will allow passengers to travel from parking areas to waiting rooms and return to parking areas from the terminal building.
PAA commercial director Rabia Salmi said passengers will be able to book e-rickshaws through an app, adding that the initiative would significantly facilitate travel, especially for senior citizens.
The announcement comes days after Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi chaired a high-level meeting aimed at developing a joint strategy to improve airport operations and public convenience.
During the meeting held on April 22, officials approved the installation of advanced detection machinery to improve the monitoring system.
It was further agreed that joint counters would be established, introducing a single point control mechanism to reduce delays. Progress in the installation of electronic doors was also evaluated.
“A unified control system in a single scanner will save a lot of time,” Naqvi said, adding that better coordination between institutions is essential to reduce crowding and long queues at airports.
