Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appointed General Aamer Raza as Commander of the National Strategic Command. He previously served as Chief of Staff of the Pakistan Army.
In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said the prime minister promoted General Raza from the rank of Lieutenant General to the rank of “Four-Star General” and simultaneously appointed him to the coveted position.
“The Prime Minister congratulated General Aamer Raza, HI(M), SBt on his promotion and appointment, wishing him the best in assuming this important responsibility,” the statement added.
The new title was established after the Pakistan Army, Air Force and Navy (Amendment) Bills 2025 were passed. Field Marshal Asim Munir was also appointed Chief of Defense Forces under the same legislation.
The Commander of the National Strategic Command was created after the abolition of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), with General Shamshad Mirza being the last to hold the position.
The law states that the prime minister can appoint the commander from serving generals of the Pakistan Army for a period of three years, based on the recommendation of the Chief of Army Staff-Chief of Defense Forces.
