While the royal family is forming a united front on Trooping the Colour, Meghan’s joke about Princess Kate resurfaces.
The Duke recounted the awkward 2018 moment between Meghan and Kate in his memoirs Replacementwriting: “A huge silence threatened to swallow us all whole.”
According to Harry, the mood among the royals was initially “good” and “optimistic” at the 2018 event, which took place just weeks after Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding.
But one brief exchange stood out. When Kate asked Meghan what she thought of her first Trooping the Colour, Meghan responded with a joke.
“Kate asked Meg what she thought of her first Trooping the Color. And Meg joked: colorful,” Harry wrote in his best-selling 2023 memoir.
Trooping the Color 2026 began on Saturday, June 13, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not be attending.
The Susexes have not been invited to the event in recent years since they stopped being royals, and this year is no exception.
Buckingham Palace has restricted the balcony’s iconic appearance to working members of the royal family. Now the event serves as a showcase for royals working under King Charles’ vision of a slimmer monarchy.
