RAWALPINDI:

The Federal Budget 2026-27 has brought a huge relief to the residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad in the public transport sector, with a significant increase in subsidies for Metro Bus and Green Electric Bus services.

The subsidy allocated to public transport in twinned cities has been substantially increased in the 2026-27 federal budget.

Compared to Rs 3,000 crore in the previous financial year, the subsidy has been raised to Rs 7,300 crore for the new financial year.

The additional subsidy will apply to both the Metro Bus Service and the Green Electric Bus Service, further improving the provision of quality, affordable transport facilities for commuters.

The Metro Bus service between Rawalpindi and Islamabad has been running successfully since 2014 and is used by millions of passengers daily.

According to officials, a plan to operate eco-friendly electric buses in 20 sectors and additional routes in the twin cities has also been included in the new fiscal year.

Public transport services have already been launched on 23 routes in Rawalpindi Division, while eco-friendly electric buses will be introduced on 20 more routes in phases.
