For about four years, death, taxes, and Scottie Scheffler passing court were among the few things that could be relied on.

Until Friday.

For the first time since the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship, Scheffler missed the cut at the Scottish Open, ending a streak of 78 cuts. It was the longest streak on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods set the record of 142 consecutive cuts between February 1998 and May 2005.

Scheffler finished two shots off the cut line after shooting a 2-over 72 on Friday to finish par in the tournament. The 30-year-old player was forceful in his assessment of his game.

“I got off to a bad start and after that, I didn’t get close enough to get many looks,” Scheffler said. “That’s how you shoot above par.”

The cut for the top 65 and ties was not official until the second round was completed. Scheffler was tied for 88th when he missed a 6-foot par putt on the par-3 ninth to fall back to par-142.

Scheffler will look to turn the page quickly as he attempts to defend his Open Championship title next week. The 154th Open will be played at Birkdale and Scheffler has not played the Links course.

“A little different than what I was planning,” Scheffler said. “Find out how I get to Birkdale and go from there.”

Scheffler was just three shots off the lead entering the day, but struggled with his putter. He missed a 3 1/2-foot par putt on the 11th hole, his second hole. On the par-5 12th hole, his chip came out of the tall grass toward a back pin and hit a ridge and rolled into a bunker, causing a second consecutive bogey.

Xander Schauffele saw his streak of 72 consecutive cuts ended at Torrey Pines in January. The longest active streak now belongs to Matt Fitzpatrick with 29 in a row.
