- Box finds that 2 in 3 ITDMs expect their workforce to grow in the next three years as AI evolves
- New roles will emerge, such as agent operators and automation specialists.
- Almost all ITDMs admit that stronger governance would help
New research from Box claims that two in three (65%) UK IT decision-makers expect overall headcount to grow over the next three years, not shrink.
In fact, only 14% believe that the workforce will decrease, and the general consensus is that AI will create new jobs, not replace human workers.
This shift in narrative comes at an important time for AI as it evolves from experimentation to actual implementation.
AI is creating new roles, not eliminating them entirely
Box now believes we are entering the era of the “agent enterprise,” where AI agents are integrated into everyday workflows and have knowledge and context across the organization, but even as they become more sophisticated and capable, the impacts on human workers are expected to be positive.
Of all companies using or testing AI agents, only 8% say they have currently caused job losses.
Among the roles most likely to be created are AI agent operators within IT teams – nearly half (48%) of all organizations are hiring for this role. Workflow automation specialists (32%), security, risk and compliance professionals (31%), change management and AI enablement roles (31%), and AI ethics and governance specialists (26%) are also crucial opportunities for human workers.
“As organizations embrace the next phase of AI, the focus is increasingly shifting from individual productivity gains to transforming the way work is done,” said EMEA President Samantha Wessels.
Although only one in three companies hire security professionals, opportunities could grow even further, with nearly one in two (45%) experiencing an AI-related data exposure incident.
Instead of framing opportunities as limited, with humans or AI helping to achieve goals, Box proposes a higher limit where AI and humans can work together to push goals even further. The majority of ITDMs (94%) now believe that better governance would help them adopt agent AI more quickly.
