- Spotify mobile apps get new playlist capabilities
- Now you can create and manage playlists on the go
- Some, but not all, Android and iOS users are seeing the update.
The latest Spotify update rolling out to users is one I’ve been waiting for for years and one that will really make a difference in on-the-go listening: the ability to create and manage playlist folders from the mobile apps.
While you could previously view playlist folders on mobile devices, you couldn’t create, edit, or delete them—something that’s now changing, 15 years after the feature was first introduced, as Android Authority reports.
Threads on Reddit suggest that some people are seeing the update, although it apparently hasn’t rolled out to everyone yet. “I’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” says one poster, summing up the general sentiment of most Spotify users.

As there’s been no official word from Spotify, it’s possible this is just a limited test for now (the code for the update was spotted by Android Authority back in March). It may be a while before everyone sees it on their phones and tablets.
Move forward and create
You can now create folders on mobile (and move playlists to them) from r/truespotify
I’m using Spotify for Android in the UK and I still don’t see the option – apparently it appears if you tap the + (plus) button on the Library page. You will then be asked to choose a name for your new folder and it will then be added to the list.
There are also a couple of additional settings worth mentioning. In addition to being able to create new folders for your playlists, the update adds the ability to move existing playlists into them, so you can sort through your library without having to go to Spotify on desktop.
Users have also discovered the ability to play all playlists within a particular folder in one go and to shuffle between the entire set of tracks across the entire folder. This matches what you can already do on desktop and web apps.
Let’s hope this is something everyone gets sooner rather than later – 15 years is a long time to wait for a feature to migrate from desktop to mobile. Perhaps it’s part of Spotify’s ongoing 20th anniversary celebrations.
