Gemini hasn’t been available through the Android Auto dashboard for a long time, but users are now having trouble making calls through the AI assistant, and some are even switching back to the old Google Assistant out of frustration.
As discovered by 9to5Google, multiple reports about this issue are appearing online. When you try to make a call through Gemini on Android Auto, you get an error message: “Something went wrong. Please try again.”
This also appears to be affecting Gemini-initiated calls on Android itself to some extent. However, while it is widely reported, it does not appear to affect everyone and, in some cases, comes and goes intermittently.
This Reddit thread details a couple of solutions that might work: going back to Google Assistant or uninstalling the most recent updates to the Google app on Android. The problem seems to have appeared suddenly.

It’s fair to say that the move to Gemini hasn’t been perfectly smooth, which is perhaps to be expected when millions of devices move from one AI assistant to another. Gemini has also had trouble getting to grips with smart home devices.
Online reactions are overwhelmingly negative, as users find themselves without operational functions in their cars. “The entire Gemini migration has been a dumpster fire,” says one commenter on Reddit, while “absolute garbage” is another notable post.
There is some light at the end of the tunnel. An official Google post on Reddit suggests that a fix is being rolled out for the issue, although the comment immediately below says that the bug persists, even after the update.
If you’re having this problem and don’t want to uninstall the updates or go back to Google Assistant, all you need to do (hopefully) is rest assured: make sure you apply the updates to Android and to the Google and Gemini apps on your phone, as they appear.
