The former WWE announcer opens the curtain on one of the best jobs she’s ever had

Former WWE announcer Kayla Becker spent eight years with the company before leaving to broaden her perspective on the broader sports spectrum.

Becker recently partnered with BZZR as he continues his career in broadcasting. Professional wrestling fans who tune into Becker’s sports broadcasts will certainly remember the days when she was behind the broadcast table for pre-shows, backstage for interviews or even announcing in the ring.

She explained how she got the WWE job in a recent interview with Pak Gazette Digital. She said she was hosting a travel segment for a local station before someone from WWE approached her and asked if she would be interested in doing an announcement.

“So, I knew someone who was working there and knew who I was because I was an ‘Orlando personality.’ And they said, ‘Hey, would you be interested in joining our announcing team? And I never watched wrestling a day in my life. And I was like, I just don’t know where my career is going,'” he said. “And one day they sent me there, to Full Sail (University), where they were doing some recordings and I was immediately captivated.

“I thought this was the craziest, coolest world I’d ever experienced, been a part of. All the wrestlers that were superstars, behind the scenes were so cool, so knowledgeable, so exciting. So I literally thought, let’s do this. Maybe I’ll be here for a year or two. And fast forward, eight years, basically, kicking and screaming, I finally got to walk out those doors. That was the coolest part of my career bar none.”

For someone who had never watched wrestling in his entire life, entering WWE was like being thrown into the deep end of a pool when he had never swum before.

Becker was in luck.

She recalled to Pak Gazette Digital the moment that got her hooked.

“I think the first PPV I remember, maybe the first one I attended, was the Royal Rumble,” he said. “At the time, I think I was just attending. I worked there, but I wasn’t on the main roster yet. So, I just got to be there as a fan and the excitement in the build-up to a Royal Rumble, if you’ve never experienced it, there’s nothing like it. At the time, I remember getting goosebumps and then thinking, wait, I work here. Now I’m part of this world. One day, I’ll be able to announce, which I did. I was a part of a lot of Royal Rumbles. “I think that was probably one of the first moments where I thought, damn, this is a cool place to be.”

Becker’s job was very different from that of athletes who perform in the ring.

She had the opportunity to make in-ring announcements before becoming a backstage interviewer and participating in pre-show broadcasts. She said she didn’t really enjoy her time as a broadcaster and felt she performed better as a backstage interviewer.

“I think my first gig I was a backstage interviewer for NXT and I played announcer for house shows. So, we’d go to little gun stores around Florida and I’d announce,” Becker told Pak Gazette Digital. “And I was never a great ring announcer. I never really loved it. The fans, I was gone for two years, they love to remind me on Twitter that I wasn’t a good ring announcer. Well, calm down guys. Try to do it. It’s not easy. But I think those days were some of the most stressful. Any ring announcer will tell you that. They mentioned Alicia Taylor, we have Mike Rome, Samantha Irvin was there for a while, that’s one of the hardest jobs, I think, in everything People underestimate ring announcers and referees because I think that’s very stressful, so as a ring announcer, we don’t have cards. You have to memorize the hometowns, the weights, the nicknames, the cadence in which you say their names. “Incapacitate,” I said, “decapitate.”

“But then as a backstage interviewer, as an actual ‘journalist’ for the company, it was very different. I think there was a lot more creativity that went into my part. I got to talk to the superstars, talk to the writers, how to best present the stories that they’re trying to tell on screen. I think I had a lot more fun in that role because I think… I had a lot more fun trying to tell the story than yelling into a microphone.”

Becker credited John Cena’s mentorship for helping her become the best she could be at her position.

“Listen, John Cena will be synonymous with wrestling and Hollywood forever,” he said. “John Cena was one of the first mentor type people I’ve ever experienced when I started in WWE. I was announcing house shows and he was giving me advice on how to be better and that continued over the years. He’s a very good mentor and example backstage.”
