- Older G Suite users are being pressured to upgrade to commercial plans

Numerous G Suite Legacy users complain that Google is pushing free lifetime users to commercial plans for apparent commercial use.
Many of those affected say they have been using legacy G Suite for family emails or personal domains for years – in some cases decades – without any commercial intent or activity.
Those who attempted to appeal the decision were met with an unclear appeals process and, apparently, in some cases, an automatic denial.
“Upgrade to a paid Google Workspace subscription”
The legacy free edition of G Suite was officially discontinued for commercial purposes in 2022, but Google allowed personal use of the suite to continue in a free-for-life format, as long as users did not use the accounts for commercial purposes.
Now, those affected by this wave of apparent commercial use have received an email that says: “Upgrade to a paid Google Workspace subscription to continue using its services. Watch for a notification about the appeal process in the Google admin console or email. If you don’t take action during the 45-day appeal period, Google will begin suspending your core Google Workspace services, including Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and Meet. As a result, you will lose access to these core services and data.”
A Google community post asking for help claims that his family has been using G Suite Legacy for almost 20 years under a custom last name domain with 15 accounts, “solely for private email and basic Google services.”
“There is no business, no revenue, or commercial activity of any kind associated with this domain. There is a lot at stake for our family,” the post states, with the user explaining that the accounts exist as part of “digital identities built over nearly two decades,” noting that some family members would not be prepared to migrate to a new domain.
Numerous users of Reddit’s r/gsuitelegacymigration also received the account update email.
“The legacy free edition of G Suite is designed for personal, non-commercial use. If users are identified as commercial users, we are enforcing our existing policy and helping them transition to a Google Workspace subscription. Anyone who believes their account has been identified as being used for commercial purposes in error can file an appeal,” a Google spokesperson said. The Registry.
Google has not explained how it relates legacy G Suite domains to business activity. One Reddit user said their account was flagged as being used for commercial purposes. and his appeal was denied. The user managed to restore his account after submitting a GDPR access request asking Google to present evidence that the domain is used for commercial use.
