Triangle's impressive new Solstice speakers do things a little differently, focusing on higher frequencies thanks to an all-new tweeter.

Did you think the summer solstice was June 21? Maybe, but the Triangle Apparently the solstice falls a day later. That’s because French audio brand Triangle has unveiled its latest family of audio products called, you guessed it, Solstice.

This new family consists of three main releases. First up are the Solstice 8 floorstanding speakers, joined to save space by the Solstice 3 bookshelf speakers, and completing the family is the C3 center channel. In the image above you can see Solstice 8.

I’ve reported on a few floor models at the moment, and the starting price of the Triangle Solstice 8 seems a little lower than the normal cost. A pair will retail for $2,799/£1,999 (around AU$4,000), which naturally isn’t cheap, but it’s still cheap.Ahem. Need more triangle

It appears that a key selling point of the new Triangle Solstice range is the horn tweeter found in each of the three products, which was designed specifically for the range. It is arc-shaped, made of cast aluminum and designed to reduce resonance.

It’s a refreshing change since most of the time when I report on new speakers, I feel like the focus is on the mid-bass or bass. I’ve written about all kinds of woofer technology and had my socks blown off in all directions playing bass in listening demos. Putting the high-end as a focal point seems unusual today.

The tweeter is joined by 16 cm midwoofers; two in the C3, one in the 3, and none in the 8 (which also has 16mm drivers, but there is a midrange and two woofers). They are made from cellulose pulp, to offer a neutral sound profile.

Both the Solstice 3 and C3 have single terminals for connection, while the Solstice 8 has dual terminal, with bi-wiring and bi-amping to avoid mixed signals or distortion.

Each member of the Solstice range comes in teak, birch, black ash or… white. The latter isn’t white-looking wood (like ash, perhaps), it’s just… white. They may not be the most unique looking speakers I’ve ever seen, but the beefed-up cabinet with stacked drivers is a proven design, and after all, it’s the sound that counts.
