MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred removed Rose and several other players from the ineligible list in May 2025, allowing the possibility of those athletes being elected to the Hall of Fame. He admitted at an owners meeting news conference that Trump’s support for Rose was one of many factors that influenced the decision.
“The president was one of several voices that supported the idea that this was the right decision,” Manfred said last May. “Obviously, I respect the office and paid attention to the advice they gave me, but there were a lot of other people who were also weighing in on the issue.”
Trump wrote in Truth Social in March 2025 that he would pardon Rose. He and Manfred met in April to discuss Rose’s Hall of Fame candidacy.
“Major League Baseball did not have the courage or decency to put the late, great Pete Rose, also known as ‘Charlie Hustle,’ into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Now he is dead, will never experience the thrill of being drafted, even though he was a MUCH BETTER PLAYER than most of those who made it, and can only be inducted posthumously. WHAT A SHAME!” Trump wrote.

“Anyway, in the next few weeks I will be signing a full FORGIVENESS for Pete Rose, who should not have been betting on baseball, but only betting on HIS TEAM TO WIN. He never bet against himself or the other team. He had the most hits, by far, in the history of baseball, and won more games than anyone in the history of the sport. Baseball, which is dying everywhere, should stop being fat and lazy, and go for Pete Rose, albeit too much. Late, to the Baseball Hall of Fame!”
Rose died in September 2024 at the age of 83 due to hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
