Recent history: The quarterfinals are something of a given for France, at least in recent years. The French have reached at least the quarterfinals in five of the last seven World Cups and have reached the final in four of the last seven years, winning the tournament twice. As for Spain, they have only reached the quarterfinals twice in the last seven tournaments, but won it all in 2010. Brazil has reached at least the quarterfinals in eight consecutive tournaments.
The host nations: Canada has never won or drawn a World Cup match in two tournament appearances. This will be his third participation in the World Cup. As for Mexico, they have two all-time quarterfinal appearances (1970 and 1986), and the United States has one quarterfinal appearance (2002).
